The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Elections 2017 are underway in Maharashtra today. While Bollywood stars have already started flocking the poll booths to cast their votes, some of the B-town stars are lending support to a special cause – the fight to save Aarey Colony, a lush green area in Mumbai that has come under threat by the proposed Metro III project.
Bollywood celebrities like Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Riteish Deshmukh, Dia Mirza, Sonali Kulkarni, Jaaved Jaaferi and many others have appealed to the public to vote for the candidate and party that will protect the forest as Aarey is a lush green hub that generates clean air for the city. As part of the Metro III project, the government has proposed to cut down hundreds of trees in the area and build a car shed.
Farhan has been extremely vocal about his opposition to the plan as he tweeted, “Urban development should include creating more green spaces, not getting rid of existing ones.”
Dia Mirza too wrote, “With density of population, pollution levels, is it not imperative to protect our green spaces, if not add more?”
